For Mary Macleod’s, it represents 45 years of baking, growing, evolving and, most importantly, staying true to what has always mattered most: making exceptional shortbread.
Since Mary opened her Toronto shop in 1981, our shortbread has found its way into countless homes, celebrations, gifts and everyday moments. As we continue celebrating our 45th anniversary throughout the year, we are taking a moment to reflect on what those 45 years really mean to us.
45 Years of Doing Shortbread Right
A lot can change in 45 years. Tastes evolve, trends come and go, and businesses grow in directions you could never have predicted.
Our approach to shortbread, however, remains remarkably familiar.
We still believe great shortbread starts with great ingredients. Real creamery butter, premium ingredients, carefully developed recipes and the patience to bake each batch low and slow. It is a simple philosophy, but one we have followed for 45 years: if you are going to make shortbread, do it right.
Our collection has evolved over time, too. Today, our signature flavours include our Classic Shortbread, Chocolate Crunch, Maple Crunch, Dutch Chocolate and Gluten-Free varieties, each made with the same commitment to quality that has defined Mary Macleod’s from the beginning.
Because while there is always room to evolve, some things are worth keeping exactly as they are.
Made for Moments Worth Sharing
One of the greatest joys of 45 years in the shortbread business is seeing the many ways people make our shortbread part of their lives.
A tin might appear on a holiday table year after year. A box might be brought along as a thoughtful host gift. A few cookies might be shared over coffee, sent to someone special or enjoyed as an afternoon treat.
Sometimes, there is a celebration behind the purchase. Sometimes, there is no occasion at all.
That is part of what makes shortbread so special. It has a way of fitting into the moments that matter, whether they are carefully planned or wonderfully ordinary.
Over the years, those moments have become part of our story. Every time someone opens a box, shares a cookie or returns to a familiar favourite, they add another small chapter to the Mary Macleod’s story.
45 Years and Still Growing
What began as one Toronto shop has grown into a Canadian-made shortbread enjoyed across the country and beyond. Our shortbread now travels to customers around the world, while our roots remain firmly planted in the city where Mary began.
That growth has given us the opportunity to share our approach to shortbread with new customers and new generations, while continuing to build on the foundation Mary established.
For us, growth has never meant losing sight of what makes Mary Macleod’s special. It means bringing the same standards, the same attention to detail and the same love of exceptional shortbread to more tables.
A Milestone We Share With You
A 45th anniversary may have Mary Macleod’s name on it, but it would not be possible without the people who have been part of the journey.
To the customers who have been enjoying our shortbread for decades, thank you for making us part of your traditions. To those who have discovered us more recently, welcome to the story. To our retail partners, business customers, suppliers and the many people who help bring our shortbread to tables across Canada and beyond, thank you for growing alongside us.
And to the generations of people who have helped make Mary Macleod’s what it is today, we are grateful for the care, dedication and standards that continue to shape every batch.

Looking back at 45 years gives us plenty to celebrate: where we started, how far we have come and all the people who have helped us along the way.
But perhaps the best part of reaching this milestone is knowing that the story is still being written.
There are still celebrations to be shared, traditions to be started, gifts to be given and, of course, plenty of shortbread to be enjoyed.
So, as we celebrate 45 years, we raise a buttery toast to Mary, to the standards she established, to everyone who has been part of our journey and to all the moments still to come.
